MNR staff say they are actively monitoring bear situation near Spruce Glen Public School in Huntsville

From MNR

MNR staff are currently on site attempting to capture a family group of bears near the school. Once the bears are caught, they will be relocated to a more suitable habitat.

However, there have been instances in the past when bears spotted near highly populated areas, such as schools, have relocated on their own. Staff will continue to monitor the situation.

MNR has been actively working in the area in the last few weeks to raise awareness about bear behaviour and work with residents and businesses on proper waste management. Recent bear sightings are likely due to attractants such as unsecured garbage.

Bears are opportunistic feeders, and when food sources like birdfeeders and food waste are easily accessible, it can increase their presence in human-populated areas. Proper waste management, like using bear-proof containers, can help prevent these interactions and encourage bears to remain in their natural habitats.
