The Huntsville Curling Club opened its first bonspiel of the season, the Halloween Spiel, this past Saturday.
Mayor Karin Terziano honoured the curling club by throwing the ceremonial first rock. Thirty years ago, she was a member of the curling club and a volunteer who helped coach the children of the community in our “Little Rocks” program.
In the picture, Terziano uses a “stick” to deliver the ceremonial rock down the ice toward the house. The “stick” Terziano was given to use was intentional. The stick is called the “Extender” and it is an accessibility aid invented by Huntsville resident Rusty Drew when his wife Roberta could no longer get down to deliver a rock. For his accessibility invention, Rusty was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, which also credits Rusty Drew with the creation of the Sport of Wheelchair Curling!
It was a great honour for the Curling Club to have Mayor Terziano open our spiel using the Extender stick.
