It was a difficult decision to make, so instead of one scholarship the Mark’s Ride committee awarded two.

Law students Miranda Wettlaufer-Stroud, who is attending Osgoode Law School, and Montana Brown (pictured above), who is attending Lakehead University Law School, were each awarded $3,500. Brown received her cheque last week, the night before she left for school. Wettlaufer-Stroud is already at school; her cheque will be delivered to her in Toronto on September 6.

“We are so thankful for the community’s support which enabled us to award two this year,” said Carrie Campbell, of the results of the 2018 Mark’s Ride fundraiser.

The event began in 2015, in memory of her late husband, Mark Reid. He was a lawyer who loved his profession and loved cycling. For the first three years, family and friends held a charity ride in his name with proceeds going to a scholarship fund for local law students. Riders who participated were asked to make a donation to the fund.

Road construction forced a change in plans last year, and a concert and silent auction were held instead. It proved so popular that the organizing committee is doing it again this year.

The fifth annual Mark’s Ride fundraising event—a concert featuring the music of Douglas McLean, Sean McIlroy and Jimmy Brendish, along with a barbecue and a silent auction—will be held on September 1 at 6 p.m. at 23 Hanes Street. Entrance is by donation.

All proceeds from this year’s event will be awarded to a law student or students from Muskoka prior to the 2020 school year.
