Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) is ramping up precautions to reduce the risk of exposure to the flu at the hospitals.
MAHC is monitoring influenza levels in the community and is screening patients for flu-like symptoms both at Emergency Department triage and at Patient Registration. Anyone experiencing a sudden onset of fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, muscle and joint pain, and/or headache, must put on a mask. While these measures are in place for patients, visitors to the hospital come and go freely.
“With the holidays just around the corner, we want to keep our communities and our patients safe,” says Natalie Bubela, Chief Executive Officer. “If you’re visiting a friend or family member, it’s important to be a good visitor and model the basic principles of infection prevention, especially during flu season. If you have flu-like symptoms or generally are feeling unwell, it is best that you stay home, get plenty of rest and drink lots of clear fluids until you are feeling better.”
To prevent spreading viruses to others, clean your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub – especially before entering and after exiting a hospital room. Sneeze and cough into your elbow, and avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
“Keeping your loved ones as healthy as possible during their hospital stay is a priority,” says Bubela. “One way we can all protect each other is by getting the flu shot. It’s the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones and helps to minimize the severity of the illness. The healthier you are this holiday season, the more time you can enjoy with friends and family.”
