Mac ‘n’ cheese, magic, music and more: The Macaroni Festival returns to Downtown Huntsville

Cheesy, gooey goodness will return to Main Street Huntsville when the second annual Macaroni Festival arrives on September 14.

The event, which is a celebration of everyone’s favourite fall comfort food, also offers a glimpse at part of Huntsville’s history. At one time there was a macaroni factory on Main Street.

The Strano Manufactory of Macaroni was established in 1913, in one of two buildings that shared the space where the Algonquin Theatre is today. (The other was the then-Lyceum theatre.)

At this year’s festival, samples of unique and flavourful dishes prepared by downtown restaurants will be available for $2 apiece. Armed with a ‘pasta-port’ and their tickets, festival-goers will be able to taste to their hearts content and vote for their favourite mac ‘n’ cheese dish for the People’s Choice Award.

There will also be a pie-eating contest at Town Hall at 1 p.m., the young Kane triplets—nine-year-old entrepreneurs—will be making freshly squeezed lemonade with a portion of sales to be donated to the Huntsville Festival of the Arts, the Huntsville Lake of Bays Fire Department will be there with their fire truck, and the 100K market will move from their usual location on West Street onto Main Street for the day.

On the entertainment front, the inaugural Muskoka Buskers Festival will take to the street from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with fire, magic, and music acts.

The Macaroni Festival runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with mac ‘n’ cheese sampling between noon and 3 p.m. (note the new hours this year). Official judging will take place at Town Hall at 2 p.m., with dishes being rated on their flavour, appearance and uniqueness. Winners, along with the people’s choice, will be announced at 3 p.m.

The Macaroni Festival is presented by the Downtown Huntsville BIA. For more information, visit huntsvilleadventures.ca.
