After more than six years as senior pastor at Riverside Baptist Church in Huntsville, Charlie Lyons is taking on an exciting new endeavour as Leading Influence Chaplain to MPPs at Queen’s Park in Toronto.

Leading Influence is a non-partisan, non-denominational Christian organization that offers personal and spiritual support to help government officials be more effective public servants.

The organization currently has chaplains in Ontario, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia with a program in Alberta currently in the works.

In addition to providing chaplaincy to MPPs, Leading Influence also writes and provides prayers to Canadians during federal and provincial elections.

“We recognize that when elected officials are healthier both spiritually and emotionally they govern better,” said Lyons.

Lyons was in touch with Tim Schindel, director and founder of Leading Influence, for over a year and a half; discussions about Lyons potentially coming on board began in January 2019.

“After seeking wisdom and counsel from mentors, a lot of prayer and having many conversations with my wife, I came to realize that this was the direction God was leading me in,” said Lyons.

On March 31, Lyons announced his resignation to his church. He will continue to lead Sunday service until June 30.

Lyons, his wife Lindsey, and their three children are moving to Brantford at the end of June and he will begin his new position on July 1.

“We turn on the six o’clock news and see ministers being grilled and harassed and we forget that each person is body, soul and spirit and we are as created in the image of God. Government officials are struggling just like the rest of us,” said Lyons. “Providing positive support can only act to change their outlook and how they govern positively.”

On Thursday, June 6, a Leading Influence event was held at Riverside Baptist Church in order to share Charlie’s story and chat about his new position, as well as discuss the Leading Influence organization with the community. Director Tim Schindel attended as well as Jason Goetzen, the Leading Influence chaplain in B.C., who shared his transition from pastor to legislative chaplain in Victoria.
