Sometimes, getting a little break from routine can be a good thing.
A new program in Huntsville aims to help adults with special needs as well as their families.
The program runs every Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is located at 1 High Street. It provides a safe and inclusive environment for adults with special needs and a host of activities. From sports to baking, arts and crafts, community outings, swimming, bowling, and even dancing, these are just some of the activities offered at LivDayProgram.
The program aims to enrich the lives of neurodiverse adults—those with conditions such as autism, Down syndrome, and other cognitive differences—by providing fun and supervised activities with a ratio of one support worker for every four participants. The program offers opportunities for social interaction and self-expression through creativity and community involvement. It also provides a reprieve for caretakers, knowing that their family member is in a safe place.
Alexander Sims, whose sister Olivia (Liv) has special needs, said that when the family recently moved here, they realized there was very little being offered in this community in the way of a well-structured day program that would provide essential support, promote independence, and enhance overall well-being for individuals. So, a decision was made to start a day program here.
