Has the Bernie Sanders inauguration meme inspired you to find a pair of knit mittens and make them your new winter staple?

Well, local mitten maker Amber Blackmore-Scott has got you covered.

Although she has only been sewing since October 2020, Blackmore-Scott has become quite the mitten maker after receiving a sewing machine for her birthday.

What began as an idea to make Christmas gifts for family and friends has turned into a side business for her. Blackmore-Scott is a full-time working mom so the mitten project is a hobby she loves to do in her spare time.

“I was looking online for an easy beginner project. I started with an all-fleece mitten which was flimsy and not very warm. I then had a few wool sweaters given to me and I tried it with a sweater and a fleece lining. They were warm and sturdy. So I continued with the sweaters as an outer shell,” she said.

If you’re looking for that extra sentimental touch, she also makes mittens from loved one’s sweaters.

“With COVID-19, spending that extra money on Christmas gifts wasn’t really practical,” she said.”I thought many of the people we buy for would appreciate something more personal, something that was handmade. So I ran with the mittens and they were a hit. I made a few extra pairs, just to see if they were something people outside my family circle liked and to my surprise they did. Even more so after seeing Bernie wearing them.”

Amber Blackmore-Scott posted this image of Bernie Sanders to the Sew Fabulous Mittens Facebook page with the caption, “Looking for mittens like Bernie Sanders? Look no further.” and earlier wrote, “I think his mittens are cute. Just saying…”

“I like learning new things and sewing was always something I thought I should know how to do,” said Blackmore-Scott. “I also like the idea of upcycling something old and making it into something new.”

If you are interested in ordering a pair of mittens you can reach Blackmore-Scott through the Sew Fabulous Mittens Facebook page here.
