Kiwanis donates $1,000 to help kids with back-to-school supplies

It’s all about the kids.

With a mandate to support local youth and help them thrive, the Kiwanis Club of Huntsville Muskoka jumped at the chance to help with the annual Staples back-to-school campaign for the second year.

The two organizations hosted a barbecue at Bullock’s Your Independent Grocer where they raised about $600 for the cause. The Club pitched in another $400 from other fundraisers to bring the total to $1,000.

Staples Huntsville uses the funds support students at five local schools: Huntsville Public, Pine Glen, Riverside, Spruce Glen and Irwin Memorial in Dwight.

“A lot of schools have kids who don’t have funds for backpacks, they’re missing school supplies that they need to be successful,” says Karen Crowe, general manager at Staples Huntsville. “We gave [the schools] a call and asked them what they needed to support their students. Most of them asked for backpacks with supplies.”

The backpacks were stuffed with supplies like paper, binders, notebooks, pens, rulers, and staplers.

Staples Huntsville also donated 28 backpacks to the Salvation Army back-to-school drive.

A total of $1,500 in supplies was donated between the two initiatives.

In addition to the money raised in partnership with Kiwanis, Staples also accepted donations at the store. Some people donated cash, while other families preferred to shop in the store and purchase supplies to donate “so their kids understand charitable giving and generosity,” says Crowe.

The next Staples fundraiser is a campaign to support Special Olympics athletes in the area. The campaign usually runs in May but due to some changes within the company nationally, they weren’t able to raise enough to provide the support they wanted to. The Special Olympics campaign will run again in-store between October 23 and November 3.
