Winter may be barely behind us, but the Junior C Otters are already preparing for the 2019-20 hockey season.
On Monday April 15, the team held a prospect camp, the first year it has done so after the regular season has ended rather than beginning to recruit and trying to connect with interested players at the end of the summer.
Junior C Otters staff worked hard to put the evening camp together for the 38 interested players, who came from both near and far, including a very strong local presence.
All prospects were put through a gruelling warm up and practice drills, as well as playing games against each other. Head coach Marc Gagnon, GM Britten Coffin, and Otters staff were looking for speed, skill, a competitive edge and hockey smarts.
Gagnon said that he was very pleased with the competitive atmosphere and the level of skill at camp. He liked that he had the opportunity to get to know the players before making a decision.
“We gave out five letters of intent to players including four local players and one from Barrie,” he said. The letters hold a spot on the Junior C Otters team for each of those players until they officially sign later this spring.
Numerous players were invited back to the Jr C Otters main tryout camp in late August. “The hard work the staff put into recruiting showed that evening and will continue until main camp starts in August,” added Gagnon. “I am looking forward to the season to get going as I can hardly wait.”
