Josh Lane, age 15, previously featured as Athlete of the Week by Huntsville Doppler, is continuing his successful golfing career.
Through the pandemic, Lane practiced his golf skills at home with a golf simulator and virtual lessons to enhance his swing while learning new tips and tricks. Once back in competition mode, his skills paid off and Lane has been invited to participate in a national event coming this month.
Earlier this spring, Lane qualified for the Golf Association Ontario U19 Provincial Championship which took place at the beginning of July in Sudbury. Over 250, U19 golfers competed in these qualifiers with 150 making the cut, and Lane was one of them, to play in the event. After two full days of events, Lane made the third cut which took the playing field down to approximately 60 competitors. After the fourth day, Lane ended up placing 42nd out of the 250 competitors. His impressive golf performance earned him an invitation to play in the National Junior Boys Championship which takes place August 6-10, 2022 in Kamloops, BC.
The National Junior Boys Championship event is for the top U19 golf players across Canada, so Lane will be competing against the best of the best in a higher age category. Although this is his biggest tournament to date, Lane’s coach, Braeden Cryderman, says that Lane is realizing his potential and has dedicated himself to working towards his long-term goal of having the opportunity to play US college golf on a scholarship.
Lane has also qualified for another U19 event at the GAO (Golf Association of Ontario) U19 Match Play in Port Hope, which he will compete in as soon as he comes home from the national event on August 14, and will be playing in many more tournaments this coming month.
Coach Cryderman, former PGA player, is also from Huntsville.
In the last two years, Lane has been partially sponsored by Bigwin Island Golf Club and trains at the elite golf course. Another part of Lane’s training has him competing in mini-series events through the Canadian Golf Association. For example, he just played in the U17 MJT (Maple Leaf Junior Tour) tournament last weekend in Barrie.
Lane is focused and is making great strides to becoming a golf pro in the making. Well done!
