YMCA Peace Week begins today.
Saleem Hall, from the local YMCA in Huntsville, is encouraging the community to come by the YMCA during Peace Week from November 14-18, and drop off non-perishable food items at the YMCA’s Peace tree made of cans of peas.
“We are observing the annual YMCA Peace Week by recognizing the important role that food and food security play in how we continue to build healthy communities. This year, in conjunction with our Peace (or Peas) Tree—because of the generous donation of cases of peas from Bullocks Independent grocer— we will be collecting all of the food and then distributing it to local community foodbanks.’
Hall noted that while the YMCA is well known in the community for delivering responsive Employment and Literacy programs, there are other social determinants of health that go beyond their traditional services. “It is events like Peace Week that allow us to realize the potential the YMCA can play here in Huntsville to give back to our growing community.”
Hall added that “peace is more than the absence of violence and conflict. Peace is the ongoing work of building and rebuilding conditions of fairness, inclusion, empathy, security, and respect for diversity. We invite you to join us in embodying the values of PEACE through your daily actions. Together, we can build a better Canada.”
Members of the community are also invited to put comments related to peace on the tree. Donations can be dropped off at the YMCA location at 60 King William Street in Huntsville, from Monday the 14th to the 18th from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
