Janet Markham, Rose Evans and Rich Trenholm honoured at Sports Hall of Fame ceremony

Sharing the spotlight with the four new members of the Huntsville Sports Hall of Fame Saturday night were the latest recipients of the Jan Glenn Memorial Award and the Mike Greaves Memorial Award which are given to the male and female sports persons of the year.

This year the Jan Glenn award was shared by volunteer dynamos Janet Markham and Rose Evans for their role in the organization of the National Women’s Under-18 Hockey Championship in Huntsville.

Their commitment to the community and the joy they get from volunteering was evident in their smiles and kind words on being given the award. Both women admitted that they don’t volunteer for the recognition but it sure felt good to get it.

“It was very overwhelming to be part of this special group tonight,” said Markham. “I didn’t realize how quickly you move on from things and this takes you back. I like reliving the event.”

Evans agreed. “It was an amazing event. It was fun to do it with my partner here. It’s all part of volunteering. You meet amazing people and have fun with them”

The Mike Greaves Award went to Rich Trenholm for his role in organizing and building the sport of Triathlon in Huntsville. He joked about how out of shape he was when he first came to Huntsville, and how he even today, forty pounds lighter, is a mediocre athlete. He told the audience that things happen when you have a dream.

Trenholm was the driving force behind Huntsville being selected as the sight for a full Ironman competition. He also spearheaded the very popular 70.3 event and formed the TriMuskoka club which now has 60 enthusiastic members dedicated to triathlons.
