Wayback Wednesday 47 Winter ribbon cutting

It’s Wayback Wednesday: Winter ribbon cutting

Welcome to Wayback Wednesday sponsored by Cavalcade Color Lab! Every week, we’ll be sharing a vintage photo and asking our readers to chime in with anything you can recall about the photo, other related memories, or even a funny caption. Have some vintage photos of your own? Send them to [email protected] and we may share them with our readers!

If Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area was a favourite winter haunt, you may know the reason for this ribbon cutting. Do you know the date, too? We don’t have names to go with this photo, so let us know if you recognize anyone! (Photo: HVHSA)

Last week we shared this photo with you:

There were many guesses on the occasion and the men present via our website and Facebook page, and also on the “If You Grew Up In Huntsville, You’ll Remember…” page (thanks to Ruby Truax for sharing it there).

Date guesses ranged from the mid-1970s to 1986 — the clothing and hairstyles helped to narrow that one down.

Many people guessed at least some of the names correctly, although a few thought Stan Darling was in the photo. (He’s not.)

As for the occasion, suggestions included ground-breaking for the new hospital, the mall, the Centre Street bridge, and the expansion of the arena.

Sean Sturgeon commented simply: Ok I want to know. Lol

Okay, Sean (and everyone else)! Here’s the scoop:

From left to right, Dr. Deane Murdy, Chairman of Centennial Committee; Claude Daughty, Chairman of Centennial Foundation; then-mayor Terry Clarke; Don Lough; then and current councillor Det Schumacher; and then-councillor Norm Goodwin at a sod-turning ceremony for the Centennial Centre expansion in April 1986.

Thanks for guessing, everyone!
