This picturesque grotto no longer exists in Huntsville. Can anyone guess where it used to be?

Last week we shared this photo with you:

You’re unlikely to see an activity quite like this on Huntsville’s Main Street again. Taken during a long-ago ski carnival, this ca. 1930s photo from the CN Images of Canada Gallery depicts skiers being towed behind a car travelling up Main Street past the Dominion Hotel (now a vacant lot where the Empire Hotel was once located).

The light-coloured building was the Lee Bros. Laundry, which was torn down (and dramatically blown up!) during the spring of 1951. Since Andrew Kellock’s lovely garden looks well established and not yet too downtrodden, I would suggest the photo was taken most likely in the early 1940’s.

Sure do … this a shot from the water on the upstream side of the swing bridge. You can see the sidewalk railing and road embankment above the grotto My guess is the shot was taken in the late 1950s or early 1960s.
As always these pictures bring back memories!! Thanks …
