A new school year begins on Tuesday. For all of the HHS students and alumni, here’s a vintage photo of the high school. Can you guess the date? (Photo via the If You Grew Up in Huntsville, You’ll Remember … Facebook group)

Here’s what Doppler readers had to say about it:
Dave Johns: Year taken would be sometime before 1967 as we can see the Texaco sign is still up at Pioneer Garage on West st south. It closed in 67.
Martin Ross: It was better in every way then, I know that much.
AnneMarie Switzer: Early sixties… no Brewers retail, Bendale Square, no CIBC, no Algonquin Theatre, cars/buses have 1960 or earlier all over them…
Roger Simmons: The Kent Hotel is shown in this picture. It burrned down around the time the Dominion became the Empire in 1948, but I can’t remember the date now.
Vern Vince: Blackburn marine on the left of bridge the hospital on the right past the trees Esso just across the bridge and NO Tims across the street and the Pontiac car dealer up the street and C T C across the way and the diary behind the car dealership. Early 60s and Eaton’s and the dominion grocery store are across from the Hudson Bay store.
Derek Dobbs: Great picture! My guess is 1956-59.
I had no idea the Empire hotel was that big.
Other guesses on the date of this postcard ranged from 1960 to 1982.
Well we don’t have the exact date of this photo, we guessed early ’60s as well. Thanks for your comments, everyone!

My guess would be late 60,s perhaps 1968
A little older a little slower and more the kind of town I like to visit than the present one but that is progress I suspect.
The picture of the school would maybe be in the 60’s. I think they built the tech wing about 64 as that is the year I started there and it was almost all “new” at that time. Everyone involved was very proud of it!
One of the few buildings that shows no sign of change from the outside is the post office. In my memory it has always looked the same.. “rock solid government” would be the architecture style I’d name it with.
I came in 1970 and went to Huntsville High. The new addition had just been added to the school. The school’s field is still grass. It was turned into a parking lot soon after I arrived. Blackburn’s Marina is still there. So I would say mid to late 60s.
