Another season has come to an end for the Huntsville Girls Hockey Association (HGHA). The Huntsville Sting teams gathered with their families for the association’s year end banquet at the Active Living Centre on Wednesday, April 4.
“The weather didn’t hold anyone back. All the house league players sported their jerseys for the last time in the 2017/18 season,” said League President Kristy Vogel.
All of the Sting players were awarded medals along with certificates. Three players from each team received ESSO medals for Most Sportsmanlike, Most Improved and Most Dedicated.
The HGHA also presented awards for specific character and skills.
The Sheila Thompson Award is for a person that goes above and beyond for the association. Sheila was the manager of the Huntsville Hurricanes.
Christine McNalley was this year’s recipient. “This young lady joined the Executive last May and took on the role of webmaster and the booklet for the home tournament. She then volunteered to take on the role as JR Rep and Secretary. She coached the Bumblebees and helped out with the Atom team. Christine has never hesitated to help,” explained Vogel.
The Richard Verdeccia Award was donated to the HGHA by the Knights of Columbus at the request of the Verdeccia family. Richard was a police officer killed in the line of duty in the 1980s. The bridge at Hwy 141 was dedicated in his name.
The award goes to a player from the Senior Team who shows great sportsmanship on and off the ice. This year the award was presented to Chelsea Babb. “She always had positive things to say and showed class on and off the ice,” shared Vogel.
The Anita Nicholls Award is awarded to a player from each team who displayed the greatest dedication and fair play in the sport and by helping others throughout the season.
Anita Nicholls was a great hockey mom to her entire team. She would keep the girls motivated and interested in girls hockey. The award was presented by her family.
The following Sting players were the recipients of the Anita Nicholls Award (pictured in the main image above):
Novice: Lilly Corbett
Atom Black: Layla Muntz
Atom Yellow: Megan McGrath
Peewee Black: Abby Allen
Peewee White: Gabby Farr
Bantam: Morgan McCartney
Midget: Kaitlyn Belfry
The night was full of thanks and reflection on another successful hockey season.
“The cheers from all of their teammates as players’ names were called filled the air with energy and happiness,” said Vogel. (See banquet photos of all the teams below.)
