From TLDSB
At the September 24 Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) meeting, senior administration and trustees swore in Grade 12 Huntsville High School student Ruby Maw as the new student trustee.
Due to a highly-demanding athletic schedule, former student trustee, Maiya Dyni, stepped down from the role earlier this month, which left an opportunity for a new student trustee to be elected. Maw was voted in by the TLDSB G7 Student Senate* during a by-election on September 18, and will work alongside student trustee, Taliah McNelly, to represent and advocate for TLDSB students. She will be in this role for a one-year term and work closely with the G7 Student Senate.
“This role means an opportunity to grow my knowledge in school leadership, while giving me the ability to introduce the voice of my peers at a Board level and inflict change within my school community,” said Maw. “I hope that despite my shortened term, I can help make students feel accepted and included in their time at school.”
“Student trustees are a vital part of the Board as they provide valuable insight and knowledge related to the student body as a whole,” said Chair of the Board, Colleen Wilcox. “They also ask relevant questions at board meetings to ensure students are at the centre of all decisions. We look forward to working with Ruby in her new role.”
*The TLDSB G7 Student Senate is a group of students made up of one representative from each secondary school elected by their peers to help communication between students and bring student issues to the Board of Trustees.
