Half-way through their 2018 season, the Huntsville High School (HHS) Junior Girls Basketball team has amassed 10 wins in 11 games along with a gold from the Barrie Innisdale tournament in early September.
It’s a fantastic start for the team, which defeated all of the teams in their league games convincingly while at the same time striving to be gracious winners, says Coach Debi Austin.
The team, comprised of both grade 9 and 10 girls, are playing like a “cohesive unit” said Austin, an important trait to have in a winning team.
Last weekend, October 12-14, the HHS Junior Girls competed in the Barrie Bear Creek tournament against 16 other schools and added a bronze medal to their solid record so far. “We ended up losing to Orillia Secondary School, the tournament champions, in the semi-finals before defeating St. Joan of Arc for the bronze-medal win,” said Austin.
All of the Hoya girls are playing hard and well together this season. The top two scorers on the team so far are the co-captains, Riley Truax #2 and Emma Fawcett #1, with an honorable mention to Morgan Smith and Monique Boyko who have also contributed baskets to the teams’ high scores.
The season is far from over as the team continues league play until the end of the month against all the Muskoka Parry Sound schools. They’ll travel to a tournament in Collingwood on October 26-27 and the MPS Championship in Bracebridge on November 6 with high hopes of finishing on top to attend the GBSSA Championships the week of November 14. Go, Hoyas!
