HHS senior girls soccer team fall to Bracebridge in MPS Finals

It was a disappointing end to the season for the Huntsville High School senior girls soccer team, as they came up short against the top-ranked Bracebridge Muskoka Lakes Secondary School Lakers last week in the Muskoka-Parry Sound Championships.

In the opening half, both teams traded chances and possession was relatively equal until Bracebridge got on the board first with a hard shot at the 22 minute mark. The Hoyas tried to respond with a quick counter-attack, but after conceding a corner kick in their own end Huntsville would see their deficit increase to 2-0 after a Bracebridge midfielder made a brilliant strike into the back of the net from 25 yards out.

In the last minutes of the first half, Huntsville’s poor injury luck continued as their starting keeper was hurt and taken out of the game. Lindsay Young, the Hoya’s fourth netminder this season, took over in goal, and was outstanding as the Lakers tried to take advantage of a new keeper with a constant barrage of shots on net. The teams would exchange goals in the second half, with Bracebridge coming away with a final score of 3-1. The Lakers will travel to Barrie this Thursday as the MPS representative of the ‘AA’ GBSSA Championship.

In the two MPS semi-finals held earlier in the day, the Hoyas took on the third-ranked Parry Sound Panthers while BMLSS played the fourth-ranked Gravenhurst Gryphons. Huntsville outshot Parry Sound 14-4 in the first half but couldn’t solve the Panthers keeper, while Hoyas goaltender Urvi Patel was solid in between the pipes for Huntsville. The pressure continued into the second, where HHS notched back-to-back markers to take a commanding 2-0 lead which held up as the final score.

BMLSS played a dominant game against a young Gravenhurst team, scoring four times despite some excellent defensive play from the Gryphons. Gravenhurst head coach David Gilbert made several adjustments to their game from their last match against the Lakers, and the Gryphons keeper stood on her head to ensure more shots did not end in the back of the net. Gravenhurst will move on as the single-A representative from Muskoka-Parry Sound at the GBSSA Championships.
