HHS celebrates student athletes at annual awards banquet

Huntsville High School celebrated a year of success on the track, in the gym and on the field last Thursday, honouring the school’s exceptional student athletes during the annual athletic banquet.

Male and Female Athlete of the Year Award
Junior Male – Owen Johnstone (Grade 9 – Cross Country Running (OFSAA), Nordic Skiing (OFSAA))
Junior Female – Natasia Varieur (Grade 10 – Cross Country Running (OFSAA), Nordic Skiing (OFSAA), Girls Hockey)

Senior Male – Tommy Giblin (Grade 11 – Sr Boys Soccer (OFSAA), Nordic Skiing (OFSAA), Badminton Doubles (OFSAA), Tennis (OFSAA)). Tommy also became the first HHS student to compete at four OFSAA events in one year.

Tommy Giblin went to OFSAA a record-breaking four times en route to a well deserved Senior Boys Athlete of the Year win

Senior Female – Madi Smrtka (Grade 11 – Cross Country Running (OFSAA), Soccer, Co-Chair Athletic Association)

True Sport Awards
A national strategy was devised with direction from the Canadian Centre of Ethics in Sport to encourage recognition of athletes who portray the characteristics of excellence in skill, fair play, inclusion, and having fun. This national program is called the True Sport movement. As a community we care about the positive values that sports embodies, like teamwork and commitment, and we want to see sport live up to its full potential.

Junior Male – Jacob Heinz (Grade 10)
Junior Female – Celeste Dupuis (Grade 9)

The senior True Sport Scholarship includes a $500 prize awarded to a female and male graduating student who demonstrate qualities of a True Sport Athlete over their four years at HHS.
