HFA launches new drama program and PA Day camps

Submitted by the Huntsville Festival of the Arts

The Huntsville Festival of the Arts (HfA) is excited to offer a number of new drama programs along with creatively themed PA Day camps. These new programs embody HFA’s vision to have a positive impact on the emotional, social and intellectual development of young people.

The Saturday morning drama programs will be offered from January 18 to March 7, 2020 and will feature classes for students ranging from JK through grade 8. The courses will provide children and youth of all levels of experience a chance to express themselves theatrically and discover the power of their own creative voice and imagination, all the while having fun!

Under the mentorship of professional and experienced artists, kids and youth will gain confidence and make new friends. The drama program will be led by Christina Serra, a professional theatre artist and educator who has performed and taught across Canada, Scotland, the United States and as far away as Istanbul, Turkey. While she has recently moved to Huntsville with her husband Dan Watson and three children Bruno, Ralph and Simone, she is not a stranger to the community. Local audiences might remember her from her performance in Ralph+Lina which played to 14 sold out performances in Huntsville.

“I am so excited to lead the drama programs with HFA!” exclaimed Serra. “As a teacher, I have led theatre and music classes for the past 13 years working for the City of Toronto, Young People’s Theatre, The Toronto District School Board and others. I also run Music and Play with Christina, teaching Kindermusik to children under seven and Disco Ducks, an original program for children two and three years of age.”

The drama program is available at a cost of $96 plus HST ($12/class) for eight sessions. The program will take place at the HFA Studio (58 Main St. East. Entrance across from River Mill Park). There will be free trial classes in the same studio on November 23 from 9 a.m. to noon (pre-registration is required).

The first PA Day camp will be featured on Friday, November 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Designed for students from grades 1 through 4, the theme for the day will be “Masks and More” with students exploring the use of theatre masks using improvisation, music and games. Each student will have the chance to use different theatrical masks and create their very own. The camp location will be the HFA Studio (58 Main St. East. Entrance across from River Mill Park) and the cost is $35 plus HST per day camper.

With additional PA Days scheduled on January 31, May 1 and June 5, stay tuned for more day camp details ahead.

  1. Congratulations on a wonderful program for kids. In addition it would be great to have a few scholarships for those who would like to participate but are unable to pay. Talent knows no economic borders. I have taught music in my different countries and access for all kids needs to be an important goal too.
