The death of Luke West, whose parents Sue Davis and David West grew up in Huntsville and whose dad was a well-known lacrosse player in this community, has shocked those who know the family.
Luke West, also a lacrosse player-turned coach, was one of six young adults killed in a single-vehicle collision in Barrie.
Many community members, including the Huntsville Hawks, took to social media to express their shock and condolences and share the following post from the Barrie Minor Lacross Association and the Bombers Jr. Lacrosse Club, where West played and coached lacrosse:
“Barrie Minor Lacrosse Association and the Bombers Jr C. Lacrosse Club are devastated to learn of the passing of one of our most beloved players and coaches, Luke West.
Luke (2000-2022) is survived by his parents, David & Sue, and his brother, Mark.
“Westy” was part of Barrie lacrosse for almost his entire life, beginning as a Paperweight in the old Barrie Tornado organization. He would go on to play in five provincial championships, becoming a two-time OMFLL Provincial Champion.
In 2015, Luke was the Captain of the first Barrie midget (U17) lacrosse team to advance to the OLA’s prestigious “A” qualifiers.
After graduating from Barrie Minor Lacrosse, Luke went on to become a core member of the Jr. C Bombers’ most successful teams. Luke first played for the Jr C’s as a Minor Midget at the age of 14. He was a locker room favourite due to his toughness, tenacity, and incredible lacrosse IQ.
From the time that he was very young, Luke gave back to lacrosse world. He was a fixture at introductory player clinics when the Bombers minor organization launched, helping introduce new players to the sport he loved. He moved on to coaching, a position he seemed born for, sharing his incredible knowledge of the game and vision of the floor. In 2022, would make his sixth appearance in an Ontario Provincial Lacrosse Championship, winning silver as the assistant coach of the Bombers U17-2 team.
We will post updates as they become available, but we ask that you respect the privacy of the West family during this difficult time.
The thoughts and prayers of the entire Barrie lacrosse community (and far beyond) are with Dave, Sue, and Mark.
Westy – the impact that you had on your teammates, coaches, and the young men you coached is immeasurable. Few have ever worked harder in Bomber Blue, few can claim to have lifted us so high. We love you, we miss you, and we are grateful for the time that we had with you.
Rest in Peace, #11.
Go Lukey.”
