TD Bank branch Main Street Huntsville

Downtown TD Bank building will be brought back to life

It’s official. The vacant TD Bank building in downtown Huntsville has a new owner.

In an email the building’s new owner, Tracy Powell, confirmed that she has purchased the location and is looking forward to developing it for retail.

“We will be approaching the Town officials and Planning department shortly,” wrote Powell. “Our proposal will be to restore the main building to its original ‘John Lyle’ presence, so as to emerge as an attractive, vibrant retail business.”

Powell is not new to the area. She’s had a home on Mirage Lake in Novar since 1987. She is also not new to retail. Powell is the owner of Zahara’s Boutique located in Oakville.

“I have been a retailer for seven years,” wrote Powell, “and many of our customers travel to Muskoka in the summer, so it is logical for us to create a new base in Huntsville.”

Powell says she thinks Huntsville is the most beautiful of the northern communities. “The downtown is special, and the mayor and council have a long term plan that is exciting. We have wanted to be part of this, and when the TD Bank building became available it was a perfect fit.”

The iconic TD bank building is a pillar in Downtown Huntsville. It was listed for sale with Jamie Lockwood, broker at Sutton Group Muskoka Realty, in February 2018 when TD Bank amalgamated its Huntsville services at its Commerce Park location.

I sure do hope the ATM will remain at that location. It’s very difficult for TD customers who don’t drive to get to the new location. I still think the move was not well thought out.

Great news. An empty space will become useful again…..Please , no more Banks deserting downtown ….It can be the end of the vibrancy needed for this special place .
