Len and Nina are proud of their home, proud of the work done by their builder, Woodland Heights, and proud of the meticulous planning that began a year before this house was started.
“We spent a lot of time sitting on a log roughly where the house now is,” said Len, smiling.
“We tried to wrap our head around what sort of house we wanted.”
They knew it had to have a large dining room and a spacious entryway, and they liked the deep porches and dormered roof of one of the old farmhouses in the area. The view was also important – the property is nestled in the woods and sits well back from Peninsula Lake, but with the right design, the couple knew they could have lake views as well as privacy.
Woodland Heights was known for building luxurious homes in Muskoka but until Len and Nina came along the company had built exclusively on its own property, 500 acres of rolling woodland known as Woodland Heights. Len and Nina toured that property and sensed that Woodland Heights understood their vision of a home that embraced the wooded landscape. That was confirmed when Woodland Heights president Bill Waterhouse toured their site. A lifelong resident of the area Waterhouse walked the site with Len and Nina, he talked about the rich history of the land, recalling tales of the earliest settlers and his own memories of playing golf on the property fifty years earlier. He also listened to their observations, thoughts, and visions for the land.
The design team at Woodland Heights helped the couple clarify that vision. Wooden beams would give definition and shape to the great room’s cathedral ceiling; a second-floor landing trimmed in tempered glass would add to the spaciousness.
The house was custom built / designed and manufactured in controlled conditions then transported to the property. The only hint that this home was built in modules are the double thick walls were the modules meet, walls which give the house an extra degree of sound-proofing. “It has all the features you’d expect of a custom-built home.” noted Len.
Len and Nina were frequently on site as their home was being built. They were still living in their old home – a converted cottage located just 800 feet away through the trees – so they came to know the workers as well as they had known the design team. “They were nice people, and genuinely concerned about our needs,” said Nina. When she mentioned that a step into the garage seemed abrupt, the foreman simply had his carpenters build a small porch. And when the carpenters left, a cleaning crew ensured the Rosses were moving into a spotless new home.
The end result is warm, relaxed and inviting. The Rustic Maple floors are a textured blend of clear sapwood and red heartwood, which gives the house an informal appeal. The colours are rich” painted throughout in warm and welcoming Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray, and a dramatic fiery Chili Pepper red on the walls of the dining room.
The kitchen and great room windows look into the forest, offering ever-changing seasonal views of wildflowers and wildlife, including twin fawns that came for handouts all winter. It’s a view that inspires and delights; it’s a view that justifies many mornings spent sitting on a log, discussing designs and contemplating a house that now stands in the woods!
After enjoying their home for 20+ years Len and Nina are now embarking on a new chapter. They look forward to turning their home over to new owners who are looking forward to making memories in Muskoka with family and friends right here at 1259 Golf Course Road!
