Painter John Ovcacik’s whimsical and colourful display of some of the more iconic Algonquin Park species garnered him the win in the Eclipse Art Gallery-hosted Algonquin Park 125th Birthday Art Contest at Deerhurst Resort.
“While there were many exceptional entries, Ovcacik’s paintings really stood out for their simplicity, vibrant colour and symbolism. We thought they captured the spirit of Algonquin Park in a very unique way,” explained Jesse Hamilton, Deerhurst Resort General Manager. “These works are quite different from anything we’ve ever displayed before at the resort’s reception desk. We think our guests are going to love them – everyone should come have a look!”
Trained as an architect and self-taught as a painter, John Ovcacik is known as an artist who creates timeless images that defy categorization. Somewhere between the real and the surreal, his subjects are reconstructions of memories, imagination and design. He is a two-time recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Award for representational art and has had his work accepted into major juried shows including the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, Arts for the Parks and the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition.
For the next 12 months, visitors and guests to Deerhurst Resort’s main Pavilion will be greeted with a stunning series of paintings by artists in celebration of Algonquin Provincial Park’s 125th birthday this year. The paintings were submitted for the second annual art contest hosted by the Eclipse Art Gallery.
The three runners up were painters Darlene Winfield, Brigitte Granton and Barb Ten Eyke.

Ovcacik’s three paintings, (‘There Goes The Neighbourhood’, ‘Off Season’ and ‘Opeongo Sunset’) all evoke Algonquin Park’s wilderness experience simultaneously on the land and in the water, which is depicted like a see-through window into what’s happening below the water’s surface.
