Council to discuss removal of Russian flag from G8 flag park

In response to the country of Russia’s invasion of the country of Ukraine, a resolution to remove the Russian flag at the G8 Flag Park is on the Council Agenda (Monday February 28, 2022).

As part of corporate policy, the flag can only be removed by way of Council resolution and reinstated when the motion has been rescinded.

As noted by Mayor Karin Terziano, “I am confident that Council will remove this flag by resolution on Monday.”

Huntsville Council shares in Prime Minister Trudeau and Premier Ford’s comments and admonishes this unprovoked aggression on Ukraine.

The Town of Huntsville stands with the residents of the Ukraine.

Re Russian flag: I’m not saying, “fly their flag.” But rather, we do need to be mindful of the fact that there are Russians who oppose Putin – just a gentle reminder to not inadvertently lump all Russian citizens with Putin.

  2. Ron Jones says:

PLEASE. ALLOW ME TO TAKE IT DOWN AND DO WITH IT WHAT I HAVE IN MIND ! ! !

  3. Craig Cameron says:

This is an absolute disgrace for The Town Huntsville!

5 days later we have all seen what this monster has done to all of these innocent Ukrainians.????
    This is an insult!

    What is there to discuss?
    Replace with Ukrainian flag

  4. Murray Christenson says:

    Russia go f#*k yourself

  5. Enno Kerckhoff says:

Take down the flag now….”disuss” later. Take the pole away as well, so we’re less inclined to put the flag back…again… any time soon.

What… and how many years… will it take until we learn that Putin is irredeemable? We’ve got to stop giving him school boy (girl) time-outs in the corner of the classroom…letting him join back in when the smoke has cleared. The walls resonate with his snickering !! ( Dick Pound of the IOC should have been thoroughly and publicly chastised for recently suggesting that it might be time to forgive Russia its doping transgressions !)

Russia’s state sponsored doping, its international poisonings, arbitrary arrests of journalists and others who dare speak out, harbouring hackers, supporting like-minded despots, ETC.etc, has clearly illustrated for years, the true nature of the regime. Even before this war, there already was plenty of irrefutable proof of Putin’s totally unapologetic malevolent behaviour.

Yes, I know…”keep your enemy closer”, but there comes a point.

Sudetenland and Czechoslovakia was the start of appeasement in the 30’s and we saw how successful that policy was then ! It is extremely worrying that what we have now is almost identical. Only the names have changed ! Has history not taught us anything ?

Sooner or later, we’ve all got to stop talking and do something ! (not though, like Biden, offering an evacuation flight for the Govt and families !!!) Throwing out Russian officials, denying landing rights, and trade… not giving the Russian flag the light of day for a long, long time, would be a start. Then, we need to stand firmly with our Allies…not just posturing, Mr. Prime Minister….on any other actions.

We must try to stop this madness/madman !

  6. Marion Psaila says:

Flag should be removed. Perhaps leaving it empty would make a statement?

  7. Chuck Muir says:

No discussion necessary! Remove the aggressor’s flag immediately !!
    Chuck Muir

  8. Henk Rietveld says:

Take it down now!!! It’s an insult to be flying this flag! Common sense and decency don’t require a council meeting to confirm the obvious. C’mon Karin, use your executive privilege and order it taken down immediately. It’s so offensive to see it flying with the other nations’ flags.

  9. Margaret Brown says:

Isn’t the point of the flags flying that all those countries were at the G8?
I agree with the idea that Ralph Cliffe had of lowering it to half mast.

  10. Sue Burke says:

    Take it down…no debate necessary.

  11. Julie Finczak says:

Completely concur! Take down the Russian flag which only represents an evil and brutal ruling class, with a megalomaniac leader.. Most of the Russian people do not agree with this attack on Ukraine.
This is a very personal and emotional issue for me, being one of the fortunate first generation in my family to be born in beautiful Canada. My parents, being born in Ukraine, felt the same way. about their adopted country, Canada. It provided them with dignity, freedom and the best opportunities for having a wonderful life through this country’s educational, medical systems and it’s many other tangible and intangible benefits. It allowed them to raise a large family.in one of the best society’s in the world.
Having endured and survived the many horrors of the second World War and then being under the brutal Russian communist rule, Ukraine finally broke away from the evils of communism and gained independence from Russia on August 24th, 1991. Each year on the 24th of August the one million plus Ukrainian descendants in Canada and many around the world celebrate this day with much joy and pride.
Many of my close relatives still live in Ukraine and it is gut wrenching for me to watch the present events unfold as I sit here in the safely.of my treasured home in Canada. I’m only glad that my parents and others of their generation are not with us to witness this horrific tragedy..

We support the removal of the Russian flag!!

  14. Sally McClelland says:

I wasn’t living here in 2014 when Russia got suspended from the G8 for the invasion of Crimea. Were there any flag-removal-thoughts at that time? Or when they permanently withdrew in 2017? Pretend they were never here at the event as part of the group? Don’t get me wrong – their actions are heinous and egregious. Just asking.

  15. john barltrop says:

Due to the unconscionable invasion of Ukraine by Putin’s Russian arm forces I suggest the removal of the Russian flag at the G8 park . If you wish to honour the Ukrainian democratic forces fighting for democracy against tyranny , I suggest you put up a temporary flag pole beside the flag less Russian pole with the Ukrainian flag flown at half mast .

  16. David Ruddock says:

The sooner the flag comes down the better.
    David Ruddock

  17. bob Johnson says:

Come on people have some Ba–ls! Take down the sign NOW. What’s to discuss? Do you actually think anyone has a problem with taking it down. Just do it and pass your needed resolution later.

  18. Ralph Cliffe says:

Lower the Russian flag to half mast as a sign of disrespect.
It’s an insult for it to be flown at the top mast with the others!

  19. Doug McKnight says:

And replace it with the Ukrainian Flag

  20. Doug McKnight says:

By now the conversation should be done. Take it down.

  21. Terry McCaffery says:

Replace it with the Ukrainian flag!

  22. Bruce Stimers says:

I agree with Allen. That discussion should last about ten seconds! Take it down!

  23. Brenda Begg says:

Allen Markel: exactly, what’s to discuss? Remove the Russian flag. NOW.

  24. Allen Markle says:

    What’s to discuss?
