Compost giveaway returns on Earth Day

Are you itching to get into your garden for spring planting? Show your plants some love with some nutrient-rich compost—for free!

Each year, for Earth Day, the District of Muskoka offers compost to Muskoka residents free of charge.

This compost is made in Muskoka from leaf, yard waste, and green bin organics.

The popular compost giveaway returns to Huntsville on Earth Day, Friday, April 22.

Compost will be available in Huntsville at the Conroy Park parking lot (20 Forbes Hill Drive) and in Lake of Bays at the Lake of Bays Community Centre (10 University St., Baysville).

Compost will be available in both locations at 10 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. Bring your own shovels, buckets, and containers. (No private contractors please.)

Get it while it lasts!

Composting reduces waste sent to the landfill

Curbside green bins, backyard composters, and organics delivered to any District Transfer Station all help to reduce the amount of waste sent to our landfill, which helps prolong the life of the landfill. As of April 4, 2022, food and organic waste can be delivered to any District Transfer Station

According to the District, “it’s a myth that food and organic waste is good for landfills. Organic material put into the landfill has a significant environmental impact. When organics (such as apple cores, orange peels, other food waste, leaves, etc.) decompose, methane is released – a harmful greenhouse gas which contributes to climate change.”

Here’s what can go in your green bin:

  • Food waste: Baked goods, bones (cooked), cereal, coffee grounds and filters, dairy products, eggs and egg shells, flour and grains, fruit and vegetables, grease and cooking oil, leftovers, meat (cooked), nuts, pasta and rice, plate scrapings, and sauces.
  • Soiled paper and other items: cotton balls, facial tissues, greasy pizza boxes, paper towels, popcorn bags, napkins, plates and shredded paper.
  • If using a liner or bag, use only certified compostable liners or kraft paper bags. No plastic bags.

Here’s what to throw in the garbage instead: kitty litter, raw meat, pet waste, and diapers. Ensure no plastic or styrofoam makes it into your green bin.

You can use the District’s online Waste Wizard or download the Muskoka Recycles app in the App Store or Google Play to check which items go where.
