Hundreds of people were in downtown Huntsville today to check out the deals and fun at the annual Summer Sidewalk Sale. From bouncy castles and games in the grass to dance demonstrations and live music to deals at downtown businesses, there was plenty to see and do.
If you were there, leave a comment with your thoughts below. If you missed it, enjoy our photo galleries from the event and the sod-laying in advance!

So how did all of that sod – 7000 square feet of it – get on Main Street? It’s part of the Green Street Challenge, an initiative by Come Alive Outside and Landscape Ontario to encourage people to get outside and play. They provided the sod and Rugged Earth Property Maintenance and the Downtown Huntsville BIA partnered to make it happen in Huntsville. About 20 volunteers laid the sod on Main Street early on Saturday morning. At the end of the day, it was donated to Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North to be sold as a fundraiser for their newest Huntsville build on Irene Street. Check out the photos and video of the process below.
- First you make the street really wet
- Then you wait for the sod to arrive on a big truck
- The sod gets dropped off on the street
- Then a bunch of helpful volunteers start rolling it out…
- …and rolling it out…
- …until it’s done!

Beauty to see part of Main Street greened over. Hopefully again & for a longer period of time. Also, River Mill parking lot would be an interesting case study for the eventual “de-paving”
Great job by all – we do have an amazing town with awesome people
Great event & a unique idea. Congrats to Helana for orchestrating the event!!
