Burk’s Falls has lost an important draw to the downtown

On May 11, 2026, the Pub, a popular eatery and tavern in Burk’s Falls, closed its doors permanently with a surprise announcement on Facebook to all its patrons and the community at large. Owner-operator Carol Downs did not elaborate on the reasons for the closing after three years in business.

However, a sign on the door by the Ontario Bailiffs’ office indicates that the landlord is taking possession of the premises for rent arrears of approximately $15,000. According to the same notice, rent for the establishment was $3,051/month.

The closing leaves a gap in the hospitality services available in the Village of Burk’s Falls just as the busy summer tourist season begins.

The Pub, situated in a historic landmark building in the centre of town, offered a mix of standard pub fare, a cheerful ambiance, and live music.

The venue was prized by local musicians who often performed there on a rotating basis. With its daily specials and weekly wing night, the Pub was a regular gathering place for families and friends. It operated for lunch and was one of only three venues in the area that provided evening services for social activities and supper. Friday night music specials were well-liked, busy and usually full of customers

Downs posted a brief statement on the Pub Facebook page stating the following:

“After an incredible three years, our time has ended at the Pub. We will be closing the doors permanently Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

“This is something we have had to think about for a long time and unfortunately this is the best decision for all our futures. From all of us, we deeply appreciate your business. We love each other and each of you so much. Thank you.”

Carol Downs, who often served tables herself during busy parts of the day, is a personable and cheerful host, and the food was plentiful and tasty. Many responded to the surprise announcement with concern not only for her personally, but for the loss of a favoured meeting place.

The Pub has been a treasured, vibrant central business in the Village of Burk’s Falls as a draw to the downtown area, which over the past years has struggled to keep pace with the demands for services and attractions on its main street.
