In January, there was an outpouring of community grief following the death of beloved local sculptor Brenda Wainman Goulet, along with many messages of condolence and support for her family. All of it helped them through a difficult time, and this weekend they want to show their thanks for those thoughtful gestures.
This weekend, May 12 and 13, they will place 1000 white pine seedlings at locations around town including the Algonquin Theatre, the Canada Summit Centre, On the Docks Pub and some of the Mother’s Day brunches for community members to take home for free. Each is 15 to 30 centimetres tall and will be individually bagged. The trees will come with planting instructions and a bookmark that was shared at Brenda’s celebration of life.
The Wainman Goulet family chose the white pine because it was the tree that Brenda sculpted most often, and because its bundles of five needles number the same as her immediate family.
If you would like one of the seedlings but aren’t able to get to one of the locations this weekend, you can reach out to the family at [email protected].

A beautiful gesture of eternal remembrance and Brenda would be so proud of your gesture of love.
May each baby tree grow strong and tall in our beautiful environment.
Brenda’s spirit will continue to live throughout Muskoka for hundreds of years. This is a fitting living tribute
to a beautiful soul. We miss her terribly.
Hi Rob, thank you for your kind words. The seedlings will be available at various locations around Huntsville. They are available to anyone and everyone. No cost or donation please. We want to give back to a community that has been supportive of Brenda and her work over the years. The generosity and support the family received was overwhelming and beautiful. We just want to give some of that back. Plant a tree in her memory and we will be grateful.
Thank you.
Mike and Pennie Wainman
Firstly, please let me assure you: I am extremely fond of your family, and would not offend you for the world. So I ask in all humility: Is there any way in which I could contribute to this loving gesture, e.g. contributing to defray the cost, or helping with the planting? Secondly, is there a central location where I can obtain the seedlings (with or without a donation)? I don’t wish to appear crass: It is not who I am. I totally respect this as family idea, but both Brenda and Halley have been very kind to me over the years. Sorry.
