If you haven’t yet crossed Arrowhead Provincial Park’s skating trail off your winter experiences list, you could take care of that today.
The popular local attraction opened yesterday, December 29; the night-time version, Fire and Ice, which allows skaters to follow the torchlit trail under the stars, launches this season on January 1, 2018.
The trail will remain open every day (weather permitting) from 11:00 a.m. until the park closes for the day (that’s 5:00 p.m. in December and January; later as winter approaches spring) except on Fire and Ice nights when the trail is closed for maintenance from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. You can check daily to see if the skating trail and all other Arrowhead activities (cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and tubing) on the park’s trail report which is updated by 9:00 a.m. Skates, snowshoes and skis are available for rent, but not helmets which are recommended for the skating trail.
This season’s Fire and Ice nights are planned from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. (weather permitting) on these nights:
Monday, January 1, 2018
Saturday, January 6, 2018
Saturday, January 20, 2018
Thursday, February 1, 2018
Saturday, February 10, 2018
Thursday, February 22, 2018
Saturday March 3, 2018
Saturday March 17, 2018
Arrowhead can get EXTREMELY busy during peak times. Plan a weekday trip if you can. Saturdays tend to be the busiest.
And remember that Arrowhead also has other fun winter activities available, too!
Tubing: Access to Arrowhead’s tubing hill is included in your daypass. Tubes are provided (only park-provided tubes are allowed on the hill; no toboggans). Check back to Arrowhead’s ski report for opening day.
Cross-country skiing: There are 28 km of classic ski trails and 16km of skate ski trails, ranging from beginner to expert level. Check the ski report to see what’s open each day.
Snowshoeing: Explore the 8+ km of marked snowshoe trails, as well as off-trail snowshoeing through mature hardwood forest. Check the ski report for available trails.
Other winter activities: go for a snowy hike or try skijoring.
