Mia Pitts, age 12, is a competitive swimmer for MUSAC (Muskoka Aquatic Club) who practices her swim techniques in both the Huntsville and Bracebridge pools. In her sixth year of competition swimming, Mia races in all three of the stroke styles—Front Crawl, Back Stroke and the Butterfly—but her favourite is the Front Crawl.
When asked why she swims competitively she shared, “I have made lots of friends on the team and I like to swim because it makes me feel good and it keeps me fit while having fun.”
Mia’s reasoning follows the MUSAC motto on their team website: “We strive to maximize the potential of each athlete to be so they can achieve their goals and become the best individual they can be. This is centered in an environment of friendship and teamwork.”
Her most memorable moment so far has been when she attended the Jeno Tihanyi Regionals swim meet in Sudbury back in June, swimming in the 100M Butterfly. This was her favourite moment because she won the Bronze medal in a stroke that she was not the best at when she started the 2018 swim season.
Her long-term goal for her swimming technique is to focus on all the strokes and to become faster when competing. “I want to keep earning personal best times and placing well within my age group.”
Her coach Morgan Kierstead said, “Mia has had a breakout season, taking off over three-and-a-half seconds from her previous best times this season! Mia has a great work ethic and always has a smile on her face when she comes on the pool deck. Mia also has a positive influence on the club’s younger swimmers as an instructor for our pre-competitive group. At the Regional Championships Mia swam a phenomenal 100M butterfly and won herself a bronze medal!”
