When the women of the Aspdin quilters group heard about the Ukrainian crisis in February, they immediately began to think about the needs of families coming to Canada. An idea was proposed to make quilts in blue and white, symbolizing the Ukrainian flag, to give to families who might settle in the Huntsville area. The group of about 12 women jumped on board to help out with the project in any way they could.
Quickly plans were put forward to make a queen-sized quilt. While that was underway, donations of quilts from many directions started coming in. Friends heard about the project and donated batting, backing, and fabric. Soon we had two children’s quilts gifted to us. When all the threads were cut and dust was settled we had seven quilts to give away!
We were fortunate to make a connection with Ginger Barkey, of MBRP, a local business. She had connections to recent Ukrainian immigrants as well as immigrants from Mexico. A date was set and the quilts were wrapped and ready to present to the families. Five quilts were presented; three adult bed-sized quilts and two smaller child-sized quilts to three very appreciative families. Our message: “We hope that our quilt brings warmth and comfort to you always.”
