Following closed session discussions at a special council meeting held today, July 29, council emerged with a resolution allowing overnight camping to occur between July 29 and September 30, 2022, at Pitman’s Bay.
The popular Town facility, located on Mary Lake, has been open for day use, particularly for family functions, by permit only. At the meeting, Huntsville Mayor Karin Terziano said there seemed to be some confusion regarding overnight camping.
“The Town recognizes that some renters may have rented Pitman’s Bay with the understanding that overnight camping was a permitted use…” read the Mayor as part of the amendment to the bylaw allowing overnight camping at Pitman’s Bay. The amendment only recognizes the existing commitments for the period of July 29 to September 30. Council also agreed to waive the rental fees for the period from July 29 to August 1, 2022.
Overnight camping is not allowed in municipal parks.
Staff is expected to review bylaws and policies related to the use of Pitman’s Bay and report back to council.
Highlands Youth for Christ, which had an agreement with the Town for use of the outdoor facility for its KidMax summer camp since 2005, notified staff in September 2018 that it would be cancelling the agreement. The Town has since been hosting camps at the facility and renting it for day use.
