To celebrate International Women’s Day and Canada’s 150th birthday, YWCA Muskoka, Reel Alternatives Huntsville, and Spinning Reels are calling on community members and artists of all ages and abilities across Muskoka to contribute a piece to the 150 Faces Art Exhibit as part of the Muskoka Women in Arts Festival.
Throughout the month of March, 150 Faces Art Exhibit, will celebrate and depict the role of women both locally, nationally and internationally by showing our collective diversity through 150 portraits of ‘women or girls who inspire us’ at Partners Hall at the Algonquin Theatre, Huntsville. Community members (of all genders) are invited to draw, paint, photograph, collage or digitally design a piece 8 ½ x 11” to be included in this non-juried art project.
These portraits can be of a famous woman; a role model; a community member; a family member or friend of the artist. It can also be a SELF-PORTRAIT, if the artist identifies as female. This SELF-PORTRAIT may also be a rendering of the artist in the future or a realization of their hopes and dreams. The portrait can be an ABSTRACT representation. Drawing skills not necessarily needed!
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: Friday March 3, 2017 at 12pm at Partners Hall in Huntsville. Contributors are asked to label each piece with artist’s first name and age if desired. They may also include a short paragraph explaining why this particular woman or girl is inspiring. Submissions may also be anonymous.
The official opening of the art installation will be March 8 from 6 – 7 pm as a feature of the Muskoka Women in Arts Festival which takes place that evening in the Algonquin Theatre. No tickets are needed – everyone is welcome and admission is by donation. This year’s festival is an all ages event and will showcase several Canadian short films, a performance by Huntsville songwriter Ruth Cassie, a series of monologues by actor, Robin Clipsham and the performance of ‘Born this Way’ by the All Abilities Dance Troupe as well as 150 Faces.
The exhibition opens on March 4 and will be up for the month of March. 150 Faces will continue to be curated and enhanced by the participants of YWCA Girls Leading Change March Break camp, culminating in a community celebration at Partner’s Hall on Friday, March 17th . The March break participants will explore inspirational women in their community and beyond, including themselves, while building a community of support and inspiration through art, conversation and fun group activities.
The Muskoka Women in Arts Festival is a partnership of YWCA Muskoka, Spinning Reels, and Reel Alternatives Huntsville. The Festival is sponsored by RBC and the Huntsville BIA and funded in part by Ontario 150 Community Celebration program.
