Young slopestyle skiers will go for gold in Huntsville this weekend

The first stop in Freestyle Skiing Ontario’s Timber Tour will be at Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area this weekend, hosted by the Muskoka Ski Club. The Timber Tour is a provincial competition series for athletes aged 12 to 18 in three skiing disciplines: Slopestyle, Moguls, and Halfpipe. This first competition will be for Slopestyle, in which athletes perform a series of tricks on obstacles like jumps and rails, and is one of only three competitions before the provincials at Caledon Ski Club February 25-28.
Athletes come from across Ontario to compete and will spend today, January 22, training in a specially-constructed terrain park built by Bosse Snow Parks. Competition heats run both Saturday and Sunday.

Among the competitors will be seven local residents and cottagers, most of them members of the Muskoka Ski Club: Mark Draper, Alex Dubé, James Edyt, Lauren Hooey, Noah Jason, Kyle Mattice, and Ethan Murdy.
The public is invited to cheer on these young athletes throughout the weekend. The first heat begins at 10:20 on Saturday morning. The schedule for both days is:
  • 10:20-11:00 a.m. Heat 1 (2 runs each): Men U20, Men U18, Women U14, Women U16
  • 11:20-12:20 p.m. Heat 2 (2 runs each): Men U16
  • 1:20-2:25 p.m. Heat 3 (2 runs each): Men U14, Men U12
Huntsville’s most famous Slopestyle skier is Dara Howell, who won gold at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
