For the second year in a row, young local golfer Josh Lane had an excellent showing at the 2019 Pepsi-Titleist Junior Tour, this time placing first overall for the U13 Boys.
He won three of the tournaments in the series to take the overall title in his division. “Josh on the golf course displays great sportsmanship, etiquette, has the strut of a champion, and a fashion that looks like it comes out of Rickie Fowler’s closest,” says his coach, David Gourlie.
Lane spent Saturdays throughout the winter off-season practicing at Peak Performance in Vaughan with coach Brad DeLuca. During the summer months, he plays at his home club, the South Muskoka Golf and Curling Club in Bracebridge, as well as practicing at Huntsville Downs and Deerhurst.
“In practice days at the club, he’s the player most others gravitate to,” says Gourlie. “He seems to be the ambassador, mediator, amongst the junior golfers. His skills and scores on course seem to motivate other Juniors to get better.”
Lane also participated in a few of the Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) Linkster tournaments. The CJGA Tour is for junior golfers aged 4-14. Lane placed third in two of his tournaments and took first place in another. He also participated in a couple of two-day CJGA tournaments in the U15 age category, placing seventh in both of them. Overall, Lane thought he did not play at his very best but he was able to place 12th at the CJGA Provincials.
Winning the U13 Championship made Lane feel like all of his practice and hard work paid off, he says. His goal for this season was to regularly break 80 for his score—which he did, achieving a season-low of 73, a score he says he is very pleased with.
