A 20-year-old Fort Albany man has been sentenced after pleading guilty to impaired driving offences involving a stolen pickup truck that was travelling the wrong way on Highway 11 in Gravenhurst.
Wabin Edwards, 20, pleaded guilty in Bracebridge court to impaired driving, failing to remain at the scene of an accident, and possession of property obtained by crime.
The court heard that on the afternoon of April 21, 2026, Ontario Provincial Police officers were on patrol in Gravenhurst when they received multiple reports of a Ford F-150 travelling the wrong way on Highway 11.
Before officers located the vehicle, callers reported it had already been involved in a collision. The truck, which had both front tires flattened, was eventually stopped by police.
Officers detected an odour of alcohol coming from the driver and found empty alcohol cans inside the pickup. An approved roadside breath test and subsequent testing determined Edwards had more than 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.
The court also heard the Ford F-150 had been reported stolen earlier that day from Etobicoke.
During the incident, the pickup struck a highway median while attempting to avoid another vehicle. No injuries were reported.
Edwards received a sentence of time served, credited as 30 days in custody, followed by 18 months of probation. As a result of the impaired driving conviction, he is also subject to the mandatory 12-month driving prohibition under the Criminal Code.
