Northeastern Ontario’s long-awaited return of passenger rail service remains on schedule, with the Northlander expected to begin operations in 2026.
According to Ontario Northland, work continues on several fronts to prepare for the launch, including testing and commissioning of the new train equipment and ongoing construction along the rail corridor.
“The Northlander remains on schedule to launch in 2026,” said Nicholas Tibollo, Media Relations Lead for Ontario Northland, last week. “Testing and commissioning of the equipment is currently underway, while construction work continues along the corridor.”
The return of the Northlander will restore passenger rail service between Toronto and Timmins, with stops in communities including Washago, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, Huntsville, South River, North Bay, Temagami, Cobalt, Englehart and Cochrane.
The service is expected to improve transportation options for residents, tourists and businesses throughout northeastern Ontario, providing an alternative to highway travel while strengthening connections between rural communities and major urban centres.
The project has included significant investments in new trainsets, station upgrades, track improvements and other rail infrastructure to support the return of passenger service. Ontario Northland has also been hiring and training staff in preparation for operations.
The Northlander service was discontinued in 2012 before the Ontario government committed to restoring it as part of a broader plan to improve transportation across northern Ontario.
With testing now underway and construction progressing, Ontario Northland says the project remains on track for its planned 2026 launch, marking a significant milestone in the return of passenger rail to the region after more than a decade.
A specific inaugural service date has not yet been announced.
