World-renowned barbershop chorus coming to Huntsville

By James Mossman, Muskoka Music Men

See the Northern Lights in Muskoka!

No, not the aurora borealis: it’s the Toronto Northern Lights chorus, performing at the Muskoka Music Men’s 29th annual Night of Harmony concert.

These guys really are stars; since forming over 20 years ago, the Northern Lights (TNL) have redefined Barbershop. In their second international competition—after just two years in existence—TNL came fifth in the world. Since that time, they have finished in the top five in every international appearance, including a run of five straight second-place finishes, and a world championship in 2013!

They have appeared on stage with Gordon Lightfoot, The Kingsingers, Cadence and Retrocity and have performed on stages in Canada, the U.S., Germany, England, Holland and China. They have also previously won the CBC Choral Competition.

Blending the traditions of barbershop with the excitement of modern a cappella, TNL shatters expectations of boater hats and pinstripes by presenting a wide mix of music from all eras, and an “in-your-face” sound and performance style that has energized audiences around the world.

They truly are the premiere men’s a cappella chorus in Canada!

The Muskoka Music men will open the show, “In for a Song!”, with a selection of numbers chosen by Music Director Frank Berg. With a mix of jazz, ragtime, blues and a couple of movie theme songs, there is something to please all musical tastes! In-house quartet “Two Four Time” will also perform, adding some doo-wop and pop tunes to the mix.

The concert takes place at the Algonquin Theatre on Saturday, August 18, starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 for adults, and half price for students, and are available at the theatre box office at (705) 789-4975 or online at www.algonquintheatre.ca.
