Willy Wonka auditions

Auditions for Willy Wonka spring show are coming soon

Are you a music maker and a dreamer of dreams? Then the upcoming auditions for Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory are for you.

Director Sarah Vanasse suggested Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory for the annual Festival of the Arts and Rotary Club of Huntsville joint production because she felt it would be a good fit for the Huntsville community. “Everyone can be involved. There are kids in the show, there are adults, there are grandparents. It’s a fun, light-hearted, comedic and cute show and I thought it would be perfect for the town.”

She’ll draw on her past theatre experience to bring Willy Wonka and crew to life – Vanasse has been directing amateur theatre production since she was in high school, graduated from Dalhousie University’s acting program, and spent some time acting before landing at Tawingo College where she teaches drama, music, visual arts and French. And she’s excited to be working with a stellar production team – Barb Hartwick is designing the costumes, Janet Copeland is the set designer and Neil Barlow is the musical director.

“I have an incredible team of talented individuals and everyone is super excited,” says Vanasse. “Barb is already hard at work designing costumes because there are some interesting ones like Violet Beauregarde who eats some gum and turns into a blueberry so we’re trying to get her costume to blow up.”

As for the cast, Vanasse says she’s “looking for people who are interested working with a director and discussing ideas to build a fun, really believable character who is engaging on stage.” Stage experience is ideal, particularly for the main roles but Vanasse encourages anyone who is interested to audition. “It’s a fun experience and the whole family can come out – you can bring your kids, you can bring your grandparents. If you’ve never done theatre before, don’t let that stop you. Everyone is welcome.”

The annual Huntsville Festival of the Arts and Rotary Club of Huntsville musical production will run at the Algonquin Theatre from March 30 – April 2 and April 7-9, 2017. Auditions for the 15 main roles and assorted Oompa-Loompas and townspeople will be held September 18 from 1-5pm at Sutherland Hall. Make sure you have a song to sing and music to accompany you, either on an iPod or a CD or bring sheet music and they’ll have someone available to accompany you. Callbacks will be September 21 from 6:30-8:00pm.
