It’s only just begun but 2016 is already shaping up to be a great year for new things in Huntsville if plans are any indication. Here’s some of what’s on tap for the new year.
Arts and Culture
A new bandshell will be complete in River Mill Park in time for the May long weekend. The project is a joint effort between The Rotary Club of Huntsville, Huntsville Festival of the Arts and the Downtown Huntsville BIA with support from the Muskoka Concert Band. Read more…
The Muskoka Maple Festival will celebrate all things maple in March and April, culminating in a weekend-long event in Huntsville. Sugar bush tours, heritage demonstrations, fiddling and antique shows could all be part of the fun. Read more…
A working group is in the early stages of creating a Huntsville School of the Arts. With passionate people involved, its early beginnings may arrive in 2016. Read more…
Sadly, Nuit Blanche North is on hiatus in 2016, but Huntsville Festival of the Arts may run a smaller daytime street festival this year. Read more…
Buildings and Roads
An empty Main Street building may see some life in 2016. The Town’s Committee of Adjustment waived parking requirements for a potential development at the former Salvation Army thrift store on Main Street, paving the way for more commercial space and perhaps a restaurant. Read more…
The Huntsville Public Library will have room to grow with the purchase of the former Mac’s store on Minerva Street. Improvements to the building will make it usable as an annex to the library; long-term plans are to expand the library on to that site. Read more…
Roads have been on the minds of almost everyone, it seems. With many local roads in disrepair, Huntsville Council has allocated $2 million in the 2016 draft budget for road improvements. Read more…
Muskoka Extended Transit (The MET) launches in mid-January, bringing another way for people in outlying communities to get to Muskoka’s larger towns. While the schedule is limited, it’s a step in the right direction. Read more…
Sustainability and Environment
Local beekeeper Craig Nakamoto is hoping to install beehives on the roof of Town Hall. He hopes to involve local students in the process. Read more…
The Town of Huntsville will know in the spring if its application to install solar panels on the roof of the Canada Summit Centre has been approved. The panels would complement the systems already in place on the Algonquin Theatre, the fire hall and Huntsville Public Library. Solar is one piece of the Town’s sustainability initiatives. Read more…
