Have you noticed the colourful signs around town? Wayfinding signs are slowly being phased in around the Town of Huntsville.
The first circuit being installed, circuit A, directs vehicular traffic to points of interest as well as parking in the municipality.
Last September, Huntsville Council opted for aluminum signs, especially cut into arrow shapes. Council was also presented with options for the posts, with wooden being more economical and steel posts costing more. In the end, Council opted for a combination of the two at a cost not to exceed $47.475.28, plus tax. According to staff, 40 signs are proposed for circuit A.
The majority of the funding will come from the Municipal Accommodation Tax and the remainder from an Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs grant.
In the 2023 budget, Council approved $160,000 for the wayfinding signs, which form part of the municipality’s strategic plan.
Staff has been directed to continue workig on the project
Council directed staff to continue implementing the project, as per the approved design, in a phased approach using funds allocated for wayfinding through the budget process.
How the colours are being used, according a report to council. See below.

I like the signs and appreciate their intent and hope they really help.
I’m still trying to figure out the connection between the colours and directions.
Certain places have a colour highlighted then later its in black …?
Things that make you say, Hmmmm ?
Please enlighten me.

Hello Mr. Austin,
Please take a look at the screenshots added to the bottom of the article from one of the reports submitted to council. Those speak a bit as to how colour is being used in the sign strategy. Hopefully that helps.

Congratulations to our current council for finally getting Way-Finding signs installed. This started back in 2010 with the G8 Summit and I have been waiting for a SUMMIT CENTRE sign since then.
My husband and I are having difficulty reading the signs – the print is small and background colors seem to work against the words. Maybe its age or maybe the signs should have been larger with ‘popping’ print.
I’d like to see some feedback from the public on these signs – anyone else having an issue?
There’s a reason speed limit signs have black ink on white background – they are conveying a message – clearly.

I personally believe the town’s money could have been better spent on other, which I believe, higher priority projects such as proper traffic control. The signs are nice and all but at the rate traffic is increasing in our town, roads and intersections are barely handling it.

The signs are a great idea – just wish they were bigger so they could be easily read.

Way finding signs are great. I noticed them yesterday for the first time.
Traffic and crowds make me avoid the downtown area almost totally in summer and any area with any kind of festival, I steer well clear of.
The main downtown draw for me for over 40 years was the Capital movie theater which sadly vanished due to economic and COVID reasons but I used to love going to a movie. If it was a decent one and not just junk. The ability to sit and watch a movie with my container of popcorn with no interruptions was always great and then we could have coffee and donuts on the way home.
Now to see a movie I have to sit through half a dozen commercials, handle 3 or 4 texts and a couple of phone calls. And my popcorn is nowhere near of the old theater quality.
It is kind of sad.
If we could get a Princess auto and a Costco I’d probably never have to leave town again except for holidays.

Thank you Tamara, Now the colours makes sense.
Should there, will there be, a colour Key sign at the entrances to Town so anyone can figure it out or … what’s the plan.?
Maybe there is already and I just missed it.

I like the signs. A great addition to our town I think.
