No one should be persecuted for being true to themselves. But every day, members of the LGBTQI+ community around the world face oppression and violence simply for being who they are.
That’s why a portion of the proceeds from an upcoming concert will support Rainbow Railroad, a global not-for-profit that helps LGTBQI+ people facing persecution based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex characteristics.
“People who support the LGBTQ+ world are unbelievable,” says local realtor and broker Scott Morrison, who has both a child and other family members who are part of the LGBTQI+ community. He created the Muskoka Intimate Concert Series in partnership with Buck Miller.
He wanted to give back to the community that has helped his child, so Morrison asked Huntsville High School teacher Erin Potts, who runs the SAGA gay-straight alliance group at HHS, for input from the students. They suggested supporting the Rainbow Railroad.
Morrison notes that in many countries, LGBTQI+ people are subject to violence and persecution. “[The Rainbow Railroad] gets these people to safety until they can extricate them to Canada. And then they can come here and be their true selves. It’s a pretty amazing organization… It’s a charity that hits close to home.”
An upcoming Muskoka Intimate Concert Series performance at the Algonquin Theatre features Juno award nominee Kellie Loder and Juno-nominated singer-songwriting duo, Madison Violet. The sponsors hope to raise enough to bring one person to safety in Canada.
“You’re not only watching live music, you could literally be helping to save someone,” says Morrison, adding that all three performers are members of the LGBTQI+ community. “These three artists are examples of people being true to themselves and being authentic. We thought that would be great to celebrate with everyone that night.”
