Fairvern Long-Term Care Home declares enteric outbreak on first floor

The first floor of the Fairvern Long-Term Care Home in Huntsville has been placed under an enteric outbreak by Public Health.

The outbreak was declared on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. In response, residents experiencing symptoms have been isolated, along with their roommates, to help prevent the spread of illness.

Fairvern staff have implemented a number of enhanced infection prevention and control measures, including increased monitoring of residents and staff for symptoms, enhanced cleaning and disinfection, the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and cohorting residents to their respective floors.

Home officials say they are working closely with Public Health and will provide updates as more information becomes available.

Visitors are being asked to help reduce the risk of transmission by practising proper hand hygiene, including washing their hands or using alcohol-based hand sanitizer when entering and leaving the home. They are also asked to visit only their loved one, follow all posted infection control measures, and refrain from visiting if they are feeling unwell or are sick.

Anyone with questions while visiting the home is encouraged to speak with registered staff.

An enteric outbreak is typically caused by a gastrointestinal illness that can spread quickly in congregate living settings such as long-term care homes, making strict infection control measures essential to protect residents and staff.
