Trinity United hosting authentic Ukrainian dinner fundraiser

If you like pierogies, sausage and cabbage rolls, mark February 3rd on your calendar.

Trinity United Church, Huntsville’s United Church Women (UCW), and members of the community will be preparing an authentic Ukrainian dinner to help raise funds for the people of Ukraine who are suffering due to Russia’s relentless attacks on the Eastern European country.

The dinner will consist of pierogies, cabbage rolls, sausage, dessert, and more! It takes place Friday, February 3 from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. The cost is $20 a plate. Additional donations will be collected for those who want to give more. All proceeds are going to the Ukrainian/Canadian Foundation to buy essentials for civilians in Ukraine who are now living in the cold winter with no electricity and heat.

Lori Sild and her husband have been watching Ukrainian news every night and wondering what they can do to help. “Seeing people bombed out of their houses and left in the dark and cold is so hard to even think about. What if it was us?  There but for the grace of God go I. I know there have been other fundraisers in the community for Ukraine but the need just seems to be overwhelming,” said Lori Sild. She and her husband are both members of Trinity United Church in Huntsville.

She said one day after church she was talking to other members and suggested a fundraiser and everyone seemed to be on board. At the next United Church Women (UCW) meeting, she asked the ladies if they’d be willing to host the event and there was again a great response. “Now we have United Church Women, church members, and others from the community as well as people with Ukrainian roots helping out, and everyone is going to do their best to make a delicious authentic dinner,” she said, adding that community members Nick and Vivian Paroche had her over to their home to learn how to make pierogies the real way and they will help with the preparations.

“I think the cabbage rolls will be a huge hit and many people requested them,” noted Sild.

Again, all proceeds from the event will go to the Canadian/Ukrainian Foundation. “They supply the Ukrainian people with essentials like blankets, generators, stoves, and other items necessary to live through the crisis,” explained Sild.

“My feeling is that this event will help us as well as the Ukrainian people just by doing something and making us a part of the international community.  We don’t have to sit at home and think, ‘wow, I wish there was something we could do.'”

She said some people have asked if takeout is available. Sild said they will do their best to fill all requests but asked that those who would like takeout bring their own containers from home. She also thanked Trinity United Church, UCW, and community members for helping work toward a successful event.

I understand there is another charitable dinner in the community that evening but even your donations help and will be gratefully received at the door if you are not able to attend and a tax receipt can be issued – call the office at Trinity or do an online inquiry at the churches website for information regarding that and what will qualify if you are chosing to help.
