TriMuskokan, here we come!

Feature photo: We can all be friends… (from left) Dopplergangers Heather Hernen and Rose Evans; the Town’s Kari Lambe who is completing the TriMuskokan on her own; Town Tri-hard Paul Calleja; Dopplerganger Dawn Huddlestone; and Town Tri-hards Matt Huddlestone and Crystal Best Sararas

We’re ready. We think. Or maybe we weren’t thinking at all when we challenged Town staff in the TriMuskokan Corporate Relay. (Read about our challenge here.) The thing is, when Rich Trenholm suggests you do something, whether he’s your doctor or not, you do it. So here we are.

The race – a short-course triathlon that winds its way from Camp Kitchen, out Brunel Road, and back again – is this Sunday (June 26).

Did you know that triathletes get up really early? What’s up with that? The short-course race starts at 8:25 am with an early morning dip at Camp Kitchen.

Our strategy had been to psych out the competition but that has done nothing to sway them in their training so we have had to switch tactics and actually (gulp) train, too.

Huntsville has hills. Lots of them. A fact that becomes abundantly apparent when you try to ride or run for longer than a few feet. Down is much easier. Could we not just find a really long hill and run down it the whole way? (Take note of this for next year, race organizers, especially you Rich.)

And have you felt the water? It’s cold. Really, really cold. Well, maybe not that cold, but definitely colder than the kid’s pool at the Summit Centre.

(We’re champion complainers – if only we could ride that all the way to the finish line.)

But we persevered.

We’re faster than we were before. Stronger, too. Clearly, sitting through marathon sessions of council has paid off. It prepared us for the challenge ahead. It’s taught us stamina.

The Dopplergangers may not be the fastest team out there. But we’re enthusiastic and we’ll cross the finish line smiling. And that’s kind of the point, isn’t it? We hope you’ll come out to cheer us on. And maybe next year, you’ll join us?
