Trek for Tourette raises $2,995

Submitted by Muskoka Tourette Syndrome Resource Unit

The Muskoka TS Resource Unit held the 13th annual Trek for Tourette walkathon yesterday. This year’s Trek was held virtually, just like the 2020 event, due to COVID-19 restrictions, and “trekkers” participated in their family bubbles.

Over 40 participants walked in communities around our region – Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, South River, Midland, and Coldwater all saw families “trekking” to raise awareness for Tourette Syndrome and raising funds for Tourette Canada.

“We are so thankful to the Muskoka community for showing such amazing support,” says event organizer Shawn Forth. “We had amazing weather, everyone participated following all public health regulations, and we raised $3000 to support Tourette Canada.”

Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month is held annually from May 15 to June 15. To see landmarks across the country lit up, search the hashtag #lightitupteal.

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a poorly understood neurodevelopmental disorder that affects as many as one in 100 Canadian children and adults. It currently has no cure.

Tourette Canada receives no government funding, and relies on the generosity of Canadians to support its ongoing work to educate, promote awareness, and provide a supportive network to families diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome. The Trek for Tourette is the only national fundraiser.

Pledges can still be made online at the website www.tourette.ca/trek
