An altercation in a Gravenhurst tavern led to a criminal charge in a Bracebridge courtroom recently.
Last month, Kaitlyn McQuarrie, 24, pled guilty to assault stemming from an incident that occurred on April 15, 2023.
Court heard that on that day at 11:30 pm, police received a call regarding a disturbance at a tavern in Gravenhurst.
Court heard that McQuarrie overheard a “transphobic comment” directed at someone who was using the washroom at the tavern. A confrontation occurred in which McQuarrie grabbed the victim and bit their middle finger. The bite broke the skin and medical treatment was required.
The court heard that McQuarrie has no previous criminal record. She was given a conditional discharge and two years of probation.

I’m glad that Kaitlyn stood up against hate speech, but violence isn’t the solution, and only sets back the acceptance that the Trans community needs. It also shows great character that Kaitlyn pled guilty and accepted the consequences.

I’ve read this probably five times. It says McQuarrie “grabbed the victim and bit their middle finger.” The victim was the one who was the recipient of the transphobic comment. That McQuarrie bit their finger seems to me that that’s not standing up to transphobic hate speech. If she had bitten the abuser’s finger – that’s another story. But as this reads, she bit the VICTIM’S finger.
